Colon, Panama lies near the Atlantic entrance to the Panama Canal. It is the capital of the Colón Province and has traditionally been known as Panama's second city. It was founded by Americans in 1850 as the Atlantic terminus of the Panama Railroad. Little remains of this original city, which burnt in fires that struck the city in 1885 and 1915, but its main decline has happened since the 1960s and today Colon is poverty stricken.
